About Nelchina, Alaska
The Nelchina mining trails are historic mining and freighting
trails originating in the early 1900s. A town called Nelchina,
abandoned now since 1942 was located about 15 miles north
of Sheep Mountain and Eureka Lodge. Access to these mining
trails is via Caribou Creek Trail (Mile 107), Hicks Creek
Trail (Mile 99.4) and the Bellanger Pass Trail (Mile 123.3).
George Bellanger was one of the first gold miners to strike
gold in the Nelchina region.

Alaska Fishing:
If you love lake fishing this is your destination. You
can enjoy fishing in and around the Nelchina area. You
can fish for rainbow trout, dolly varden and arctic grayling.
Looking for a quiet place
to take the family for the weekend close to home? You
can't beat the family atmosphere here. The fishings great
and the drive is close forv those watching the gas prices.
Cycling:
Cycling the Nelchina area is for the serious adventurer.
Wrangel- St Elias National Park is within reach. Plan
your day trips using the Nelchina Lodge as your home base
biking and hiking through Alaska's impressive mountain
ranges. Enjoy rugged and breathtaking cycling with miles
and miles of untrammeled wilderness that will challenge
you.
Hiking:
Hiking in the Nelchina area introduces you to wildlife
viewing, exploring the tundra, old gold mining camps,
spectacular glaciers and remote fishing lakes. The best
time for hiking in Alaska is June through September. Although
early September may be a bit chilly, it is an excellent
time to catch the brillant fall colors and migrating caribou.

This is a
Great Spot for Rock Hounds & Fossil Hunters:
Look along the Glenn Highway from mile 139 to 143. This
locality is relatively close to the road. There are two main access
trails leading up the south side of the mountain from the Glenn.
This locality has been known to produce good marine fossils of
Jurrasic age.

the Nelchina Lodge. Known for its abundant wildlife, mountain
views and plenty of fresh snow. It's one of the best kept secrets
in Alaska.
